Aboriginal School HealthThis is a featured page

School health programs and approaches initially developed in Europe, Canada, the United States of America and the Western Pacific in response to their respective dominant, western cultures and traditions. Although these comprehensive school health strategies are intended to be holistic and rooted in the local context of the schools and communities in which they are implemented, research and practice has shown that current CSH programs are often not sufficiently relevant to the cultures and contexts of Aboriginal and indigenous regions, schools and students.

A redesign of school-based and school-linked approaches, programs and practices based on the strengths, traditions and values of Aboriginal communities is needed. This redesign process must build on the excellent work already done in several tribes, countries and states/provinces/territories as well as identify and address the current priorities for school health as identified by the Aboriginal communities.

Key Aboriginal leaders and practitioners, policy-makers and researchers- those who can provide an authentic voice for the issues- are being invited to participate in a dialogue circle, in order to identify and focus on the culturally appropriate approaches and priority wellness issues relevant to Aboriginal communities.

This international dialogue will be conducted in a series of meetings, conference calls, web meetings, presentations and on-line dialogue through this wiki. The leadership for this discussion will come from aboriginal communities and school health leaders in several countries. Support has come from three Canadian knowledge organizations. Several national school health associations from different countries are assisting with the project.
